The driver who ran down Corporal Scott Wheeler was fined only $310.

ELLICOTT CITY, MD – The case against the Columbia woman who was speeding when her car struck and killed a Howard County police officer last year has been dismissed after she paid the traffic fines resulting from the accident, the county state’s attorney’s office said yesterday.

Prosecutors said Stephanie Latoya Grissom paid two traffic citations Friday rather than appear in District Court to contest the case, which was scheduled for today. Grissom received three points on her driving record and paid $310 in fines for negligent driving and speeding, investigators said.

On June 16, 2007, Grissom was traveling on Route 32 near Interstate 95 when Officer Scott Wheeler, who was working a speed enforcement detail, stepped out into the road to flag her down and the car struck him. Police said Grissom was driving 71 mph in a 55-mph zone.

In March, a Howard County grand jury declined to indict Grissom on automobile manslaughter charges.

LaPlaca, unfortunately, it’s not just in Maryland. At least in Florida they would lose their DL for a year. The fine however, sound about right! But the again, that is what most in society thinks we are worth! :-( R.I.P. our brother...

Disappointing, but not particularly surprising in this day and age. RIP Cpl. Wheeler - your brothers and sisters will not forget your sacrifice.

DocThomas, I'm with you Brother!! The truth to the matter is this, despite the disrespect we get from society, we will all show up to work tomorrow doing what we do best. Stay Safe out there! And hopefully someday society will pull their head out of their A$$.

There is no difference between this incident and the many incidents involving LEO's striking a civilian. Unless you have been drinking or drag racing, a reckless driving ticket is all anyone can get if they are involved in an accident where someone is killed. If you want to see a vehicular manslaughter charge, move to California. Refer to the Ashley McItosh case in Fairfax , Virginia just recently closed. The officer was given the maximum charge, reckless driving.

This is a tragedy. There should be no reason for that woman to have gotten off so cheap! And what does the D.A. think of him or herself in the morning when they make a decision like this? Probably glad they do not have to do our job. R.I.P. brother Wheeler. Thank you for your service. We will take the watch from here.

It just goes to prove one more time that when a police officer does his/her job they are not backed up by the system or community they serve!!!!!. We as police officers took our jobs for a reason and when events take place that the systems or community thinks there should have been a different outcome they don't back there law enforcement and leave us out to dry. It seems that were only good when someone needs us at their emergency not for every day patrol or enforcement of the laws made by our states, which are made for offenders not law abiding citizens.

What's the Scoop?
