Has security destroyed your personality?

Posted 5 months ago I'm wondering if I'm alone on this one. I've been in security for a little over 2 years...and I can say I was a much more decent person before I started. Has the stupidity of other people and the knowledge of what people think of us changed you in any way? |

| Posted 5 months ago my bottom line says it all.......! I'm the same person but have become able to see through the B$ that makes up the world MUCH easier and not take things personally. I still give everyone the same fair shake. I saw a post last night about security guards and the demeanor they project to the public. With an air of professionalism and respect given to the public, they may hate me and my job but things get done and then they move on. There are times that I have to BITE MY TONGUE and HAD to have more of a rough exterior. Someone last week brought up the point that learning to exist outside the public gaze and look 'Right Through The Crowd' when there's chaos and people complaining has become MUCH easier..... ......live at peace with everyone........ |

| Posted 5 months ago Some good, some bad. I now curse like a ^&^%$#%^& sailor and I seem to be a little desensitized to certain situations and attitudes. I have switched from sympathy to empathy, and I have NO patience left for trivial whining (yeah, if you had 1100 inmates whining at you all day long you wouldn't have patience left either!). It is a little tough on my kids when I come home from a 12 hour shift and I take out my frustration on them. I try not to, but it takes an extreme effort to change from work attitude to home attitude. However, I have become tougher and more confident, and have learned to take on a strong leadership role. | Posted 5 months ago Oh yeah!! I have gotten less tolerant of some people's never ending stupidity. I worked in corrections for 4 years and have been in dispatch/records for 1 year. I have learned that you can't fix stupid is more than a comedians line for his/her act. I am constantly amazed at how easy it is for some idiots to lie, cheat, and steal without thinking twice.Or are they capable of thinking? Genetics must play a big part in this. Generation after generation come to our fine establishment to rest for a spell. I was extremely naive before being employed as a corrections officer(and to an extent still am),but I have learned that most people we deal with will lie if it helps their situation and most of the time even if it doesn't. I still try to be fair and help people but 90 percent of the time, they will turn on you before you are finished dealing with them. |

| Posted 5 months ago Greg, unless you're working some very rough assignments... security should NOT change your personality....and if it is and you don't like it....QUIT now before you hate yourself.... Unless you're topped out in the market, chances are that you can find a better job for more money than what Allied Barton (or many contract companies) pay now. I'm not "really" a troll....I just love changing my avatar... because...

| Posted 5 months ago Well, I have worked some REALLY crappy spots; scum is too nice a word to describe these people. I've done everything possible to get out of the field, but for some reason I can't; I don't blame anyone, I just can't seem to get over this hurdle. I actually decided to make the proverbial "lemonade" and start my own security co. I figure I may as well do awesome for myself rather than for someone else (part of the reason I'm disgruntled is the lack of having a legit security co. in town; Allied Barton is not excluded). I'd like to say thanks to those of you who have posted. |

| Posted 5 months ago Neither security nor corrections destroyed my personality. When I get to work, I "switch on" my work mode. And I "switch off" on the ride home. I never treated a civi like an inmate, and I don't let the job affect my personal life in any way. I've actually learned to create a work "bubble" in my mind. That persona is kept seperate from the real me.
.....at work, I have to be nice to the stupid people. Outside of work, I'll still lay into them! Red blooded right wing Christian, anti-hippie nutjob. Any questions? I must say, Corrections hasn't changed me one bit either. I still get upset seeing people die [children and infants in particular], regardless of what I saw during murder trial guard duty. I still despise rapists and murderers the same way I always did, and I still behave the same toward my kin. Just gotta "switch off" when leaving work is all. I will say however that I never stick my hand where I can't see now though. For a lightswitch, ect, I'm very cautious. Red blooded right wing Christian, anti-hippie nutjob. Any questions? | Posted 5 months ago To "Riot": have you ever been security? See, at least with being a CO or LEO, you're there, you know? With security, you're nothing. The ridicule is terrible...maybe it's just a San Antonio thing. Idk. People down here make sure you feel like crap for being security. meh...I'm done with this topic. If you haven't done security in high risk areas, for minimum wage, and been made fun of every step of the way...I don't want to hear it. I'm not gonna pretend to know what it's like to be a CO or LEO, I 'd appreciate it if it went both ways. Thank you. Everyone have a nice day. |

| Posted 5 months ago I wouldn't say security work has changed my personality, but Like someone said before me, when you go to work you turn it on, when you drive home you turn it off. Thats about it, but some of the things I have seen while on the job I think have made me more mentally tougher, but that is a personal opinion. I don't laugh in death's face. I tend to make belittling comments and snigger behind death's back. |

Yes I've been security...I got worse from my peers when I was an Explorer than when I was security. lol No offense bro, but this is the exact attitude that security officers get mocked for. "I'm sorry but if you haven't been there then you don't know." What???? Been where? A club? In a parking lot? Holy hell...your duty is for the property and nothing else. For an LEO his/her duty is to the public. You can walk off and say "I was gonna radio for help." The police are your help. I am not LEO and I wont claim to be...but come on dude, if you want to meassure penises I'm sure there's another site for that. ¡GØÐ HņH ÑØ ƒÜR¥ †HÂÑ À Pϧ§ËР؃ƒ PÁRņRØØPËR! Ríø†!™ |

I've been a security officer, a CO and for the past eight years I've been LEO. Riot has a point regarding your statements and your attitude. I've been on the crap end of the stick as a security officer, and I've received my fair share of insults and ridicule, but you know what? Who gives a rats a$$. I was working towards a goal and most importantly I was providing for my family. Also, what makes you think that I didn't catch flak when I was a CO and also an LEO? If you plan on continuing on to a LEO career, then you would be better served by remembering that being a LEO isn't about the badge, uniform, or the car you get to drive. It's about attitude, presence of mind, and the ability to project self confidence. That also applies to any job that you may have. If you are wanting to continue along a path to law enforcement, then I wish you the best of luck, but you are going to need to develop a little thicker skin. |

| Posted 5 months ago Ok. Ya'll are right. I DO have the wrong attitude. I know, and I've been trying to change it. But to counter just a little bit, I wish that all of my sites were just walking around empty parking lots, writing reports, and running away when something happens, but they weren't. I've had guns pulled on me, i've been stabbed, and poked by syringes (at the gay clubs i worked). I'm not trying to "measure penises" as you so eloquently put it and I'm not asking for a pity party (although it's starting to sound like it). But once again, I know I have the wrong attitutde about all of this. I don't mean to make waves or anything, so I say we squash this. Thanks for taking the time to post on this topic, I really do appreciate it. Especially Riot. Sir, I hope I haven't created any ill feelings here. So everybody, take care of yourselves and be safe out there. |

| Posted 5 months ago If the job is getting to ya....Maybe is time to get out and find another line of work. I don't want you to get hurt. I can handle anything that life throws at me~ I may not be able to handle it well, or correctly, gracefully, with finesse, or expediently ~ But I will handle it. |

| Posted 5 months ago After only two years of constant employment in security you believe the job is responsible for your personality, my guess is you very little personality to beging with, christ man, 2 years and your a burn out already. I see where you think you have seen the worse of humanity but unless your in charge of peace in the Gaza strip stop with the pity party and the over inflated and embellished danger, there is an abundant of boredom in every profession, like most certified officers here the first time in a patrol unit by myself in a ward and taking the first alarm call at a church at 5pm on a Wednesday I believed it had to be a break in as there cound't be any other excuse, adrenaline pumping, factoring in all my officer safty techniques learned at the academy and going over in my mind what I was going to do "When", not if, I caught the bad guy, a few thousand alarms later, unless fired upon at an alarm call, my blood pressure probably drops rather that raises, I still use all the officer safty techniques, just without the adrenaline. Lifes hard, get a helmet. |

| Posted 5 months ago You know, I have been in Security a longtime.. I have dealt with a lot of stupidity from other people. I don't let it get to me. Also, I don't let the stupidity change me.. I just deal with it and keep doing my job.. Respect is ALWAYS EARNED; and is NEVER given !!!!!!! | Posted 5 months ago Been in security for a little over six years myself, and if its dragging you down that much, get out while you can. Starting your own company ain't gonna be easy by a long shot. And the insurance you'll have to pay is insane! Being nosey, i once saw what one company of mine was paying out and it was five digits, and i'm not sure if that was just for the month. Odin is very blunt, but if its gotten to you that bad, its time to move on. |

| Posted 5 months ago Being in different types of security for the last 10 years has definitely changed my personality, but mostly for the better. My tolerance for stupidity has lowered tremendously over the years, which has pissed off friends and family alike more than once, but that is a mixed deal. After 10 years of security, I'm tired. This field, unlike LEO, is not full of people with common goals and/or accomplishments. The folks in security are like wizards to asswipes from one place to the next. Finding a place with a quality group of personnel is very hard, and to me that was the most difficult thing to deal with. I'll work any post out there, from boring and mundane to adrenaline pumping madness, but stick me with a douche for a partner and that ruins everything. I got out of contract an started working in-house for job stability, but even here we've had somebody's village idiot. Forget what other people say about you for being security. You're skin gets thicker and the insults just roll right off you. If I cared about every insult I've heard since working security, I'd be serving life in prison right now. Seriously, if its affecting you that much, you either need to get out or change venues asap. Don't let a company shatter you're morale. Pick it up, move on, and prepare yourself for a future full of much worse (if you still want to be LEO). And don't say we're nothing. Security is something, otherwise we wouldn't exist. We've got our purpose, although it may suck sometimes and a lot of people still think we're worthless. BTW, if you're really serious about starting your own SG company, be ready for a ton of hardships. Its a difficult process and can be extremely costly and discouraging. |

| Posted 5 months ago I've only been in security a year or so and no it has not changed me. I guess this is similar to being in the military and in my particular job being around Type A, over achiever, know everything fighter pilots. I have learned over the years that they get served everything on a silver platter, but when they really need something, they called on someone like me who enlisted, wears stripes and has as much or more education then they do; college and experience. I've had my share of run ins with newbie Lt's and Cpt's. Put em in their place as well. Here at the company we secure, they are just like that and I can tell they look down at me as just a lowly security guard. But, if one of them keels over at his or her desk, guess who they dial when they they hit 911 in the building? Guess who would be the first responder. If security is causing you feel like this, I agree, get out. Certified wiseacre. Proudly serving since 1986.

No illegal immigration, medical care, S.S. reform and gas prices did that. Security just gave me a place to vent my frustration. Pain is weakness leaving the body. Obstacles are what we see when we take our eyes off the goal. |
