LATHRUP VILLAGE -- A 37-year-old police officer from the Detroit area has been killed while serving with the National Guard in Afghanistan.
It is unclear how Matthew Hilton died Thursday.
Lathrup Village Police Chief Robert Jones tells the Detroit Free Press that military officials said Friday that a roadside bomb exploded and was followed by gunfire.
Jones says Hilton, of Livonia, had been a reservist for 18 years. The officer had served in Iraq in 2005 and volunteered for the Afghanistan mission which started in January.
His wife, Mary, also is in the National Guard and returned from Iraq in May.
Jones says Hilton joined the Lathrup Village department in 2001 after working as a Detroit police officer.
WILX-TV in Lansing says his mother and stepfather live in Dimondale.
