I will be buying my first Harley this January. I am having a hard time picking between the Road King or Street Glide. I know the typical answer is "test drive and decide". I know from experience you can not always tell the best bike from a short test drive. Too many things pop up later that you did not discover on you 30 min test drive. Any input on these two bikes would be welcomed. .. Short back ground--> I need a two up touring bike. I have narrowed it down to these two bikes.

I ride a road king. They are called ROAD KINGS for a reason

In the market myself, I've never owned a roadbike I'm looking for a comfortable large frame bike for long trips

I have an '03 Ultra Classic and love it. On long trips, it's like riding your couch....very comfortable for rider and passenger. There is also plenty of room in the tour pack and saddle bags, not to mention any additional luggage options you can purchase through HD. It is a heavy bike, though, and will work you in heavy traffic.

The Ultra Classic is the largest street bike harley makes. You can find similar bikes in Honda Goldwings, but that is just in body style, not quality. Besides, there is a family among Harley riders. Harley also makes a "trike" (3-wheeler) with good space and appears comfortable/stable, but I have never ridden one.

I ride a King at work and when I am off duty. I love my King, probably the best HD for both local riding and long trips. did a cross country trip on it in 2005 and still riding it today. In 2009 I will be getting a new HD and it is going to be another King.

Gotta go with the LT. here... I ride a 2005 as my personal bike, and have ridden them at work for three years, as well. This year, we switched to the Electraglide... same bike, just with a batwing faring.

I would have to go with the Street Glide.  The choice between these two bikes comes down to cosmetics.  They are built on the same frame, they have the same running gear, they are basicaly the same bike, just one has a fairing the other a windshield.  I have an '07 Electra Glide (feel free to check out the pics in my albums.).  I prefer the Glide because one I wanted a stereo, two I wanted a CB, three the fairing offers better wind protection, four I prefer the speedometer placement on the Glide better (up higher in the fairing vs. on the gas tank).  I ride an Electra Glide at work, but I have ridden the Road King as well.  You really can't go wrong with either.  Like I said, it just comes down to personal prefrence.

I agree, both bikes are great have ridden them both.  I own a Road King Classic and for me thats the best choice, I like the idea of taking off the windshield on short around town rides, although the hard bags are better in the rain and when you want to lock something away.  Thats my two cents.

I ride a Road King but my next will probably be a Street Glide. I lovbe the look and alot of the stuff you would have to add on to an RK is standard on the Glide.

Just to throw out another option to you I have a '04 Victory Kingpin and love it.  My wife and I have gone on several long rides and have had no complaints.  Victory now has the new Vision as well which I have not riden but hear that it is the altimate in Touring Cruisers.  And they say Victory is the " New American Motorcycle".  Just another option for you to look into.

GO TO MY PROFILE AND LOOK!!!  I OWN A 2007 STREET GLIDE CUSTOM, THIS BIKE SITS LOWER, HANDLES BETTER, HAS A RADIO, AND HAS CRUISE CONTROL.  AND YOU CAN ADD A TOUR PACK IF YOU CHOOSE.  I HAVE RODE A ROAD KING SEVERAL TIMES AND ITS A GREAT BIKE, BUT THIS IS A NO-BRAINER (STREET-GLIDE). MY WIFE WORKS FOR HARLEY-DAVIDSON AND CUSTOMERS THAT BUY ROAD KINGS ARE BRINGING THEM IN AND TRADING UP TO STREET GLIDES OR ULTRAS.  MOST OF THE ONES WHO TRADE UP, SAY THEY ARE DOING IT FOR THE COMFORT AND RADIO. AND IF YOU WANT THE BEST PRICE ON ONE CALL HARLEY DAVIDSON OF CENTRAL MISSISSIPPI. 601-372-5770 THEY SELL THERE BIKES AT MSRP!!!  GOOD LUCK.........

I think everybody has pretty well covered it but I'll throw my 2 cents in anyway. I ride Electra Glides at work and I love them. My last 2 personal bikes were an 03Ultra and my current 07 Ultra. We travel as often as possible and the added features on the Ultra really make it the better value. Better stereo, intercom, CB, cruise are all standard. With the fairing and the lower fairing, I never wear chaps in the winter anymore. You can always take the tour pack and lower fairings off for your local rides if you prefer that look. Just a thought...

Anyway, one of my best friends went from an Electra Glide Classic to an 05 Road King CLassic.  He really liked the bike but last year he traded back into an 07 Street Glide.  He says its his favorite.

FYI, DO NOT let your significant other sit on the back seat of an Ultra unless you want to own one! :)

This past weekend I had to work the Little Sturgis bike rally in Sturgis KY. which made me think of my next question. How do I compromise between comfort and looks. My concern is getting one of the larger models and having it look like (sorry) Grandpa's bike. Can I have an ultra classic, or street glide and still have it customized and sporty looking? And where does the Fat Boy fit in. (not lulusgt, the M/C)

KSP494 there are almost unlimited possibilities for the big baggers.  I would suggest picking up a copy of Hot Bike Baggers magazine and you will see plenty of baggers that are obviously not "Grandpa's bike."  Of course I believe that the stock Street Glide is fairly sporty looking (hence the direction I went with my bike).  The custom market for baggers is booming right now because of the surging popularity of that segment of motorcycles.

I have had my MC license just over a year but little experience riding.  Have a 1982 Yamaha 1100 Maxim w/ 10k miles that is nice when I can keep it running (carburator problem).  I just bought a 95 Heritage Softtail Anniversary Edition from my Dad w/ 2900 original miles.  Just getting a feel for it now by local riding in the neighborhood.
