DECATUR, Ga. -- An inmate who had been featured on "America's Most Wanted" died early Friday in the DeKalb County jail.

The Greene County Prosecutors Office was notified by authorities in Georgia that Umoja Iddi Bakari died early Friday morning of what appears to be a suicide.

Georgia officials said around 3:35 a.m. Friday a detention officer found Bakari hanging by his t-shirt, which was around his neck and hooked to the hinge of the door. He was not breathing.

Efforts by medical staff and the jail and emergency medical services to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the DeKalb Medical Center at 4:01 a.m.

The DeKalb Count Medical Examiner’s Officer will make the final determination on the cause of death.

Bakari had been charged in a 22 count indictment relating to allegations of an enterprise involving drug-trafficking and was arrested by Georgia authorities on June 24, 2008. A co-defendant, Chelsea Hornsburger, still faces charges as a result of the same investigation and her case in pending.

The investigation of the drug enterprise with respect to other individuals continues by the Greene County Task Force.

I am so sorry to hear that an inmate has had to endure such cruel and unusual punishment while incarcerated in a Georgia jail. I mean to kill yourself over the conditions of the jail...umm, OH wait....Maybe that was his guilty plea? Hope the Georgia tax payers are not having ot pick up the funeral tab.Suppose the old saying is true; " if your not willing to do the time, then don't do the crime" or do and just kill yourself when you get caught.

I hope his death was utterly painful.

I understand that its a relief on our tax dollars, but to talk about someone that made a bad decision, he was a father, a son, let God be the judge of his stupid mistakes and not you all to make silly comments such as. You all are heartless people but entitled to your opinions as I am.

I would but I'm too busy banging your momma and your sister, yeah and at the same time too!!!!   Better hide your dog because she's next!!!!   Since you are close to his family and they are already dressed for the occasion anyway hopefully they will be attending your funeral next, if you need a t-shirt to do yourself with let me know, I'll gladly show you how kind I am by giving you the one off my back to do it with you scumbag!!!!

We pushed him to his breaking point? How was that, by arresting him for his decent size narcotics operation? Terribly sorry for that. Next issue: you think this criminal's funeral was better attended than a police funeral? Have you ever seen a police funeral? Even if you got all of this guy's "customers" together, you couldn't begin to touch a cop's sendoff. Lastly, I have a favor to ask: if you're going to insult us cops, please try to come up with something a little more creative than "stupid pig." I'm wagering you can't, since I'm guessing your lack of creativity matches your lack of intelligence. But you have yourself a great day there, tiger!
