This site is POLICElink. When you went to that top part of your screen and entered an internet address you put in w w w . p o l i c e l i n k . c o m    Why? Hmmm...lets think of some possibilities shall we?

1. You are a police officer and would like to see how other departments handle matters. You would like to discuss your job with others who KNOW what you are dealing with.

2. You are an aspiring police officer and you would like to know more about the career from those who live it. You would like to get an insight that only an officer can offer, that no book could teach so that you can truly decide if you are cut out for the business.

3. You are thankful for the work police officers do and you came here to show appreciation and support.

4. You hate police officers and feel that you are macho and cool by coming to this website and telling them that. (FYI-if that is why you came here you best turn around and walk right back out because I for one will be more than happy to let the door leave an imprint on your tush as you make an involuntary and much deserved exit!)

Now, let us discuss further...for those of you who do not know me let me inform you that I have spent much time and money on college, 5 colleges in fact! In order to get into college I first had to go through kindergarten, first grade and on through the twelvth grade. In those years of school I learned some great things that I will share with you now.

1. Knowledge is power. (Let me offer you some information they fail to mention with that saying- Some knowledge can build the mind while other knowledge can break the spirit. That there is an Amber original folks and I learned it from personal experience!)

2. We learn about the past to avoid the same mistakes in the future.

3. To get respect, you have to give respect.

Those are some key points to keep in mind, consider them the foundation of this thread.

I too had a misconception when I was at this site. In college for Criminal Justice I learned how correctional officers, detention officers, police officers, lawyers, judges, etc. all fell under the 'Law Enforcement' umbrella. Here is where I am finding part of the problem at PL; while you may be Law Enforcement, it does not make you a LEO. (Pay close attention, this is ground breaking, major, first class, OMG type of news!) POLICElink is about POLICE OFFICERS! I think where the problem has found itself among many is the "LEO" "Law Enforcement" thing. I can see where it is confusing, so I figure if we all look at it as Police Officer rather than LEO it may help clear some things up for the time being. Now I have watched many threads where it was nothing more than a "mines bigger than yours"; well for once it is true-its not about the size, it is about how you use it. With that said let me offer a little more clearer understanding to what I am trying to say. Security guards, campus cops, etc do not (in most states) hold the same authority as a police officer. I see a lot of debates that the person thinks they are LEO because they have a badge, well lets cut out the "LEO" part and look at it this way...this site is not a LEO site, no one is against a LEO opinion, this is a POLICE OFFICER site, and it is a POLICE OFFICER opinion that is being looked for. Just drop the Law Enforcement umbrella and grab the POLICE OFFICER part of Law Enforcement and you will see that this is what the site is mostly about. Yes, every aspect of Law Enforcement is covered here but Ask A Cop does not mean anything other than someone wanting a POLICE OFFICER's opinion. Maybe it would help if it said Ask A Police Officer instead of Ask A Cop, I dont know. But I am sure most civilians do not go to a college campus or to the mall to ask "My neighbor is growing marijuana in their garden in their backyard in my suburb, can you help me?" No, they go to the POLICE station, or call the POLICE department, or ask a POLICE OFFICER (usually when they are in the middle of something more important than playing 20 questions). For some reason I think many of you still do not realize the "POLICE" part of "POLICE"link...I do not know how to better explain it, sorry.

Now let me address the nincompoops of PL. You say you are just wanting answers to your questions. You whine that you were only trying to understand. You piss and moan that the responses are harsh and uncalled for. Here is a friendly tip-revise, revise, revise, then press submit! Thats right dingbat. Type out what you want to say, but before posting go back and reread it. Make sure what you are saying or asking would make sense. If need be read it back to yourself out loud. Also, remember that these officers do not have to waste their time off on your idiocy but they are willing to take the time to help offer clarification IF YOU ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS. Also, POLICElink means you will be talking to a POLICE OFFICER and if you cannot handle the way they talk then take your thin skinned spineless tush to www.mommywipemybutt.com and have a nice day. Another thing I have noticed, and since it is usually in Ask A Cop I will not post it there (I'm a nonLEO, therefore meaning my opinion stays off that forum, only my questions get to be posted there---get that through your thick head yet?), is that the cry babies who feel they are being spoken to harshly are using the same words and language in which they say they are offended by. Ummm, can we say hypocrite?

So, ladies and gentlemen, LEOs and nonLEOs, thank you for taking a moment to read my rant of the night. I may have missed something so feel free to elaborate. If I was not clear on my opinion feel free to ask and I would be more than happy to try and explain more thoroughly. Above all thank you for your time, may you remove your head from your butt if you having been suffering from that problem, and may you have patience with those who fail to realize their head is up their butt and wont remove it.

Thank you to all the police officers who put their lives on the line, risk relationships with family and friends to be on duty, and take the time to put up with nonLEOs like me so that I may try to understand your sacrifices.

Stay safe and God bless

Amber

P.S. I reread, revised, and am about to hit submit. It is almost 1am here so I may be speaking through tiredness, I will check back tomorrow to see if anyone understood what point I was trying to make or if I will need to revise the entire thing being more awake than I am now. :) Ya'll have a fabulous night!!!!

Well Amber as soon as I can stop laughing .........I must say this is a fantastic post. I am very impressed.  You are firm in your beliefs and I must say that I agree with them. Polite and a touch edgy and sarcastic, but not overly so . Are you studying  to become a Police Officer by chance? I think you umbrella analogy is great. Thank you for explaining this in a way I never could. You have done a wonderful job of explaining the feelings of many of us here  and I  for one truly appreciate it.  Thank You and Kudos to you.

Kudos Amber, like I said in another post- you are by far the best non-LEO I have met yet.   The truism with a nice touch of sarcasm is just beautiful.  Since I am probably one of the ones you are referring to that can be harsh, oh hell I am definitely harsh but only when it deserved by people like "Farva",  I think your rant is awesome.  Keep up the good work and a big........

non-leo,  do you think there is anything a nonleo can contribute to a LEO that would help them with their job?  Do you think there are things that have gone on throughout time that never stop, and input from people who don't want to be a part of certain types of life but are stuck in that environment can contribute to a solution to problems in this life or that things will always continue as they are or that only LEO's have the intelligence to come up with solutions to different problems that happen in this life?  I'm a non-leo and I don't mean this as sarcasm but because I think sometimes something that gets said on PL could come to mind sometime and help a LEO remember something someone said that may help them get through a similar situation.   I don't believe everyone is just out to prove themselves in some way but some really want to help whether they are made to be a LEO or not.  I've also gotten advise from some Officers that have helped me with work, health conditions and my kids even if they don't know it.   Some of the things that get said to me on here make me feel horrible but there have also been things that have helped me get through different things.

In like manner the spirit also joins in with help for our weakness, for the problem of what we should pray for as we need to we do not know but the spirit itself pleads for us with groanings uttered.

I am glad my post came across accurately, I was tired when I wrote it. Yes, there was sarcasim in my post (there is a thread about sarcasim, ya'll should read it ;)). No, chimp I really wasn't refering to you or anyone else (like KSP for instance :D), many of the police officers here who give a response with a real world tone are considered harsh by the wimps who are looking for a sugar coated answer to their question. You along with others know we do not live in a fairy tale wonderland and I think people need to realize that if they want to ask a question, they better be prepared for the answer....maybe we should list diapers in the gear section since many here cant handle the truth they say they want to know!? And dep, thanks for the hug but retract the claws and teeth please!!! :)

Sues,

I do understand what you are saying. This thread was made based on a private conversation with someone that inspired this topic. The main point is that there is a time and a place. I am no exception, I have learned the hard way at times as to what my place and PL is and it has taken time. Thank you for your feedback sues, have a wonderful day! :)

You are also forgetting another section - retired and former police officers.  I'm not sure about retireds, but formers don't get the star, even if we put in close to our 20.  The lure of the better job at the cost of the star.  No biggie.  It's a trade-off.  But I should be able to contribute meaningful content and even sarcasm, if I so choose, on this forum, as well.  My husband is also a police officer, so that counts for something, too.  What I see a lot of on this site is something you mentioned, the proverbial pissing contest.  Are campus police REAL police?  Are Capitol Patrol police REAL police?  Are Reserves REAL police?  Are specialized units like ATF, ABC, Narcotics, etc. REAL police?  Are Probation Officers, Corrections Officers, etc. REAL police?  Then we get into people saying that upper management and detectives have been off the beat for too long and no longer know what happens in the REAL field of police work.  This is a never-ending argument and there is no clear-cut winner.  Bottom line is, if you are/were (without getting fired) a police officer according to your job description (probably meaning that you went to the same police academy that the street cops did and have the same powers of arrest, etc.), then you are/were a REAL police officer.

I think ODIN covered this very well in his thread. I cannot recall the name of it right now, but he discussed very well on this topic. So I think if you apply his thread and a little of this one and you'll have a little more understand to offer those on the boards who do not get it. :)  (shellgame, when I say "you" I do not mean you directly, I used it generally.)

Shell game as you know we work in a grey world. Far more grey than just Black and White.  But we as LEO's enforce laws written in black and white.  With that said To a degree you are correct in the grey areas of life but as for me if you fit the requirements of HR218 then you are LEO and that should be and I think is being used here to determine LEO status

Sues,

non-LEO's, especially you and non-Leo can be very helpful with answering stuff and also remind us, or at least me, of why we are here and why we chose to do the job that we do.  I think a lot of focus is being put on the sarcasm and pops by some of us to others on the site.  From what I've seen and also the smack-downs I have layed on people here are usually very well deserved.  I think all types of law enforcement officers (campus, park, sheriff's, corrections, etc.) deserve the same respect.  Sometimes guys get popped about where they work for a variety of reasons, mostly all in good fun but sometimes because of their response of attitude.  But in response to your post, yes I think almost everyone here has something good to contribute including non-Leos who can definitely contribute to us and our jobs.

Amber,  that was very nicely said and coming from another non-leo who understands that this is a police forum and us non-leos are guests in their home and should respect it as such. Like you said in the title thread, "it's not rocket science" us non-leos are not to post in the "ask a cop" thread unless asking an intelligent question.  It's a simple rule and one that I follow. It does not mean we are not welcome here, but if we know our place and we'll do fine.  :)   Not only repecting the job these men and women do on a daily basis, but also respecting their wishes or rules is another part of it.

Thanks for posting this, I think your sentiments hold true for many of us non-leos, especially me.

Amber,

Excellent post. I especially enjoyed the comment about re-reading before you post. As I am also a non-leo, I too have been brought up short for posting in the wrong place.  But I am here as a SUPPORTER (yup says that in my Status) as you are and I have found areas where I can be of help, if for nothing more that to voice my support (hmm, seems to be a theme here)

Thank you for so elloquently stating about who's who and what's what.  May we all remember the thin blue line.
