| Posted 3 months ago When I was a Detective in Maryland I was also a volunteer fireman. Without specific fire training I would not switch from Cop to fireman. I could be dangerous to myself and the other fireman without training. |

| Posted 2 months ago I have a lot of respect for fire fighters. They have a job not all that unlike ours. They often have hours and hours of boring routine work interupted by moments of sheer terror. Perhaps not as often, but it certainly is possible. Just yesterday, for those that were following the news, a firefighter was shot and killed while responding to a fire. The fire, apparently was set as a ruse for an ambush. To say one is better than the other is discrediting to all of us, police and firefighter alike, that are willing to put ourselves in the line of danger for those we serve. I used to be a fire fighter, but their job is nothing like mine. How many times do you see a solo fire fighter respond to a fire and expected to take care of the fire? We respond to calls alone most of the time and expected to take care of it. How many time have fire firefighters pulled over a drunk driver in the fire truck? ........ |

| Posted 2 months ago I keep a fire extinguisher in my squad... does that count? But seriously, firefighters are mostly volunteer where I live and work, so... my vote is no, it doesn't pay well enough..... that's making the bold comment that I do now though.... lol Sorry that's another thread! A hole has been found in the nudist camp wall. The police are looking into it .... |

WELL STATED JAKESDAD, I AGREE. WHEN HAVE FIREFIGHTERS HAD TO FIGHT THE HOMEOWNERS OF THE HOUSES THEY ARE PUTTING OUT? HOW MANY TIMES HAVE FIREFIGHTERS BEEN SHOT AT, SPIT ON, THREATENED, PUNCHED, KICKED, AND WHATEVER ELSE WE GO THROUGH COMPARED TO US. MOST OF MY FRIENDS THAT ARE F.F. WILL SAY "THATS WHAT THEY PAY YOU FOR" NO IT'S NOT. I DONT GET PAID OR COMPENSATED IN ANY WAY FOR THAT. DIDN'T GET AN EXTRA CHECK WHEN I GOT SHOT AT. DIDN'T GET AN EXTRA CHECK WHEN I GOT SPIT ON OR BIT. SO THAT'S A POOR RESPONSE. I HAVE SEEN F.F.'S FIGHT ABOUT WHO WILL HAVE TO TAKE THEIR CALLS INSTEAD OF JUST PAUSING THE MOVIE OR THE XBOX AND GET UP OUT OF THE LEATHER RECLINER. I HAVE NEVER SEEN A FF GO INTO A BURNING HOUSE ALONE TO FIGHT A FIRE. NEVER SEEN ONE FIGHTING WITH A COUPLE OF CRACK/METH HEADS UNTIL BACKUP ARRIVED. MOST OF THE ONES I KNOW WORK THE KELLY SYSTEM AND HAVE TWO FULL TIME JOBS WITH DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS. SO DON'T SAY THAT THEIRS IS LIKE MINE BECAUSE ITS NOT. ITS LIKE COMPARING CATS TO DOGS. THE ONLY THING THEY HAVE IN COMMON IS THAT THEY ARE BOTH COMMONLY KEPT AS PETS. YEA, AT TIMES, THEY HAVE A TOUGH JOB. YEA, THEY PROVIDE A NEEDED SERVICE. BUT SO DO SECURITY GUARDS AND GARBAGE MEN. I DON'T WANT TO DO EITHER OF THEIR JOBS AND I'M GLAD THAT THEY ARE THERE DOING IT SO I DON'T HAVE TO. BUT OUR JOBS ARE NOT THE SAME, NO WAY, SHAPE, FORM OR FASHION. |

| Posted about 1 month ago I am always happy to see Firefighters show up at a traffic accident. Those guys are Professionals that povide emergency care and do it in a hostile enviroment. As a LEO I have the option to back off of a situation if need be and change my game plan but those guys may have to go into a burning building to save someone. I fully respect all that you guys do and appreciate your service as well. With all that said "Heck No, you guys can have that job!" |

| Posted about 1 month ago A Catholic Priest, an Indian Doctor, a rich Chinese Businessman & a Policeman were waiting one morning for a particularly slow group of golfers in front of them. The Policeman fumed, "What's with those guys? We have been waiting for fifteen minutes!" The Indian Doctor chimed in, "I've never seen such poor golf!" The Chinese Businessman yelled out, "Time is money!! Get moving!!!" The Catholic Priest said, "Here comes George the GreensKeeper, maybe he can do something about this." "Hello George" the Priest said. 'What's wrong with that group ahead of us? They're rather slow, aren't they?' George the GreensKeeper replied, "Yes. That's a group of blind firefighters. They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a fire last year, so we let them play for free anytime they wish." The group fell silent for a moment. The Catholic Priest said, "That's so sad. I think I will say a special prayer & light a candle for them tonight". The Indian Doctor said, "Good idea. I think I will contact my opthalmologist colleague & see if there's anything he can do for them." The Chinese Businessman said, "I think I'll donate $50K to the fire-fighters fund in honor of these brave souls." The Policeman said, "Why the #*!% don't they play at night?"
That's where the lines are drawn. Hose-monkies love to rib the cops & vice-versa. It's all in jest with mutual respect & honor within their profession. So-and-so thinks the Packers are #1 whereas Philly thinks their team is the best. I am a Police Officer & proud of my chosen profession & would put it up against ANY other profession to include firemen. They would do the same. Forza, good thing you're not a moderator- calling out people based on their threads is communistic to say the least. Threads are a way to have a discussion on just about anything they want (within reason) & you don't have to resort to a type of name calling to get your point across- Piss off. |

| Posted about 1 month ago No way I would not switch. I always tell my Hose draggin buddies that I would be more than happy to guard the water cooler while they fight the fire. I will make sure that it is cold when they need a break. No desire to run into burning de-railments or structures.OH, I can switch out an SCBA bottle for them to. I guess you were a paid city fire fighter with little understanding of firefighting outside of your area. Nearly 75% of the firefighters and EMTs in the USA are unpaid volunteers - that means they either work another job or have retired and still respond and fight fires for nothing. For six years, I would commute an hour, patrol for eight hours, drive home for an hour, and then be on call as part of a ten man volunteer fire department in rural California. Yes - sometimes a solo firefighter does respond to a fire and have to handle it until engines from further away get to scene maybe twenty minutes or more later. Imagine being the sole responder to a burning home, knowing there may be people inside but forbidden to make entry. I saw headline news here recently when a cop pulled an unconcious driver from a burning car - some firefighters do that and more several times a day - as you well know. Actually, too, CalFire does have sworn law enforcement who do pull over drunk drivers. Ordinary volunteer firefighters have to deal with drunk drivers at the scene of crashes, without the benefit of weapons or restraints, or a badge. Firefighters do get shot at by the very people who place the 911 call. We responded into areas (usually Native American Rancheria's) where we would have to wait for law enforcement escort, sometimes watching a home (trailer) burn to the ground not knowing if there were families inside. Being a volunteer firefighter means not drinking alchohol, as you can't respond on a call if you've had a drink in the previous eight hours, during your personal time. No getting off duty and going for a beer! It means missing family events. It can mean missing paid work. It can mean being got out of bed at 2am, and not getting home for two or three days. It can mean finishing work at 11pm, getting to bed at 1am, and going out on a four hour call, cutting mangled bodies from wrecks, while the officer stands by complaining that you're not clearing the road quickly enough, before getting back to bed for another two hours, and having to go back to work. In a rural area, it is not uncommon for a volunteer to be first on scene, and alone - not supported, no traffic control, no protection from the drunk, for twenty or thirty minutes. It can mean going out on a call at 2am, and then another just as you get back into bed. As a volunteer, it can mean giving up one night a week for training - every week. By the way - the in service death rate for firefighters is about 80% that of law enforcement. You're right - their job is nothing like ours. I wonder why you're not a fire fighter any more - you wanted better hours, better pay, better conditions, less physical work, clearly you're not a firefighter any more because you wanted something better. And then you denigrate your former colleagues choice of work. I wonder what you'll say about cops when you find a better job! 2006 Statistics - 1,140,900 US firefighters - 823,950 were volunteers - around 100 on-duty deaths every year. 2004 Statistics - 836,787 US Sworn Law Enforcement - around 130 on-duty deaths every year |

| Posted about 1 month ago No more bashing of firefighters on here please. There are firefighters on this site too and some them are also verified LEOs on PL. Police Link Forums Moderator PAIN IS WEAKNESS LEAVING THE BODY! |

| Posted about 1 month ago There has not been any "bashing" that I can read on this post. Good humored ribbing maybe, but certainly no "bashing". It's funny awitham how you quoted the second paragraph of jakesdad but left out the beginning paragraph: He respects the hose-monkies. Just about everyone's comment on here shows the respect that they deserve. Will anyone sworn LEO say that being a firefighter is better than that of their chosen profession? Absolutely not. Jealous a little? Maybe. More often than not, it's just good-natured ribbing. I was in the Corps in an Infantry unit. We'd give the squids a hard time but if anyone tried to pick a fight with our medic? He was looking for an a$$-whipping by everyone in our platoon. Our corpsman was our brother. Chewing the same dirt we were, climbing the same mountain, hurting just as much as we were. Same thing goes for the hose-monkey. They're out there on the front lines with us when called to do so. Yeah, I can rib him or her a little but the first civilian puke who puts his hands on one when they are trying to do their job? It's time for just enough force to effect the arrest.
A firefighter & policeman died & went to heaven. St. Peter issued them their wings with a warning: "If you have one bad thought, your wings will fall off." A few weeks later, a pretty woman walks by & the policeman's wings fell off. As he bent over to pick them up, the firefighter's wings fell off... |
