Domestic Response
You’re out driving the streets and over the radio or your MDT screen comes out the call for a domestic in progress. You copy the call turn on your overheads and siren, kick up the music and head in the direction of the domestic.
The big question here is do you still use the techniques you learned at the academy, or have you slumped into the ways of the 30 year veterans no offence.
When arriving on scene remember the following.
Never Park directly in front of the house you are called to.
When approaching the house beware of all avenues for an ambush. DON’T GET TUNNEL VISION.
After knocking on the door stand off to the side so there is some cover and you are not trap in the Fatal Funnel.
Never stand in front of any windows. Or avoid it if at all possible.
If the individuals inside tell you its open come in, DON’T make them come to the door.
Don’t be afraid to make the parties involved step out side. It’s better to have them out of there element.
Always remember that if you hook some the victim is mostly likely to attack you or be come belligerent.
My motto is “We all go home at the end of the shift”. Keep in mind your training over the years. Don’t get complacent and you will stay alive.

DV's can be soooo unpredictable. My old Dept always insisted on backup before entry, except in life/death sit's obviously! We would "stand off" and observe waiting for 78. We were supposed to have someone from opp sex also, but that didn't always happen.

Good article, overall...however we must all remember that there are 15 ways to do this job, both correctly and incorrectly. Never enter a residence upon a suspect 's say so. Take a position of cover and make them come to the door. Talk about standing in the fatal funnel... Why step outside, once outside with a suspect, how do you get in to check on the possible injured. If he refuses you entry, you'll most likey cuff him; then what do you do with him? If the suspect has something to hide in the residence and you have allowed him to exit, you have just widened his cone of escape. Be safe...go home!

Good reminder! Domestics can get very ugly, deal with them in the right way and you will live. Deal with them in the wrong way, and you die.
